About 170 families with developmentally challenged children who use the Special Services at Home respite program will soon have to amke a trek downtown to apply for funding.

Under new rules announced this spring, families will be required to make their applications for funding at the Ministries Provincial Office in the Ellen Fairclough Building

An anonymous letter that suggested an autistic teen should be “euthanized” among other things does not meet the threshold of a hate crime, Durham regional police said Tuesday. However, charges could still be laid as police continue their investigation. “Despite the hateful language used, the Crown Attorney’s office has advised that the content of the letter falls below the threshold for a hate crime,” police said in a statement on Tuesday. Foundation Goals
The objectives of the Canadian National Autism Foundation are charitable. The Canadian National Autism Foundation has been formed to provide funding for:
* Educating the general public and professionals
Educating others is very important to CNAF, much of the general public is unaware of autism and how it affects ones behavior. Each child/adult with autism is very different from one another and often have different triggers.
* Providing information and resources to families of people with autism
* Providing funding for Canadian based research and development

Tina Fougere, the founder of the Canadian National Autism Foundation, said her 17-year-old autistic son doesn't take off as often as he did when he was younger, but is still considered a flight risk.

There were a few times when he was in elementary school in Hamilton, Ont., where he escaped from the school grounds and ran onto the road. After years of training him, he now knows to stop when he's asked and even responds to others' voices, she said.

In her ideal world, runners would be outfitted with a beeper, much like an ankle bracelet used to track people under house arrest. But she notes that such devices could do more harm than good.

"You're trying to help that child fit into society the best way we can, and yet you're drawing attention to them," she said.
