2008 Events Canadian National Autism Foundation recognized for making a difference The Canadian National Autism Foundation was honoured for its financial contribution to autism research at the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation Donor Recognition Event last month at the Waterfront Banquet and Conference Centre. The CNAF was recognized for achieving a cumulative giving level of $10,000 or more, which qualifies for public recognition on the donor wall at the McMaster Medical Centre of Hamilton Health Sciences. “It feels really good to be recognized by somebody big like that,” said CNAF founder and president Tina Fougere. In total, the CNAF has donated $12,000, which was used to support Offord Centre for Child Studies director Dr. Peter Szatmari and his autism research program. “We are very grateful for this most generous donation. Dr. Szatmari has made important contributions to the study of autism, how it may be caused, its early diagnosis and how we might better deal with the effects of this condition on children and their families,” said HHSF executive vice-president of philanthropy Pati Greenwood. “The support of the Canadian National Autism Foundation ensures that this important work may continue to help families across Canada and around the world.” Formed in 2000, the CNAF is a charitable organization dedicated to promoting the positive enhancement and quality of life for people with autism in Canada. It provides funding for educating the general public and professionals, information and resources to families of children with autism, Canadianbased research and development and national autism awareness. Over the last six years, the CNAF has sponsored autism research in the amount of $97,500 at various institutions, including the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, National Research Council of Canada in Manitoba, National Service Dogs of Ontario and McMaster University. It also sponsors and organizes visits to elementary and secondary schools, along with goodwill ambassador Walter Gretzky, with the goal of educating students and staff about autism and the importance and value of differences. In addition, CNAF provides support to parents with issues at home, school and in the community.Ms. Fougere says autism is becoming more recognized. “It’s not so much about finding a cure because people with autism, a lot of them don’t want to be cured because then you’re taking that identity away from them it’s about finding out why autism has come to be and why now it’s becoming so predominant,” she said. “It doesn’t matter who you meet, you know somebody that has autism. Back in 1998 to 2000, it was one in 25,000; now, it’s one in 150, so that tells you how much it’s grown.” Ms. Fougere’s concern for children with autism and their families stems from her own experiences with her son, Nathan, who has autism.
